Always measure your dog: weight and breed aren't enough.

• Collar: measure around the neck where the collar will sit. You should be able to slide two fingers between the collar and the neck.
• Harness: you need three measurements: chest girth, shoulder clearance (from the chest to the withers, on one side only) and the belly strap (from the front of the chest to the chest). See the harness size chart.

A collar is ideal for carrying ID tags and for dogs who walk well on leash. A harness is better for a dog who pulls and for long lines: always attach a long line to a harness, never to a collar.

In Québec, in a public place, a leash must be no longer than 1.85 m, and a dog weighing 20 kg or more must have its leash attached to a harness or head collar. Your municipality may have its own rules too.

Always attach the long line to a harness, never to a collar. A long line helps training but doesn't replace recall practice.

For dogs who back out of their collar, like some sighthounds or fearful dogs. The martingale collar tightens slightly so it can't slip over the head. For most dogs, a clip or belt buckle collar works very well.
