FAQ

What should I buy first when adopting a puppy in Canada?

Three things to have before you pick up your puppy — not after, because adoption day is emotional and it moves fast:

An adjustable clip collar. Lightweight, comfortable, and properly fitted (the two-finger rule: you should be able to slip two fingers between the collar and your puppy's neck). This is what they'll wear from the moment they're in the car.

A short leash. For those first supervised outings, trips between the car and the house, and any moment where you need immediate control.

💡 Tip: If you want an engraved collar with your puppy's name for adoption day — something many pet owners do as a keepsake — order a few days ahead. See Q4 for details.

An umbilical cord leash. The most underrated tool of the first few weeks — and by far the most useful one indoors. See Q5 for details.

At Tanzo, all three essentials are handmade in Canada in Biothane — waterproof, odor-free, and ready for real Canadian conditions from day one.

What is Biothane and why is it the best material for a puppy in Canada?

Biothane is a nylon webbing coated in TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane). Here's what that actually means for a Canadian puppy owner:

Waterproof — snow, slush, spring mud, puppy accidents — everything rinses off in seconds. A little dirty? Warm water and mild soap, and you're done.

Odor-free — even after weeks of cold, wet outings.

Stays flexible in the cold — unlike leather, which stiffens, or nylon, which can go rigid below zero.

Hypoallergenic — no irritation on a puppy's sensitive skin.

⚠️ Important note: Biothane is waterproof and highly durable — but it's not more chew-resistant than nylon or leather. A puppy who chews their leash can damage it quickly. Never leave a puppy alone with their umbilical cord or leash, and don't let them chew their accessories. If the strap is damaged, replace it — it's a safety issue.

Tanzo puppy accessories are designed for real Canadian life: handmade, tested by owners who actually go outside all year, and built to last through multiple seasons.

How do I choose the right clip collar size for my growing puppy?

Measure your puppy's neck with a soft measuring tape, add about 2 cm of room, and choose an adjustable collar that covers that range. The two-finger rule: you should be able to slide two fingers between the collar and the neck — no more (escape risk), no less (too tight).

Why a clip collar for a puppy? Because it's quick to put on and take off — no fuss for you or your pup — which matters a lot when you're doing it multiple times a day.

Puppies grow fast, especially larger breeds. Choose a collar with a wide adjustable range so you're not buying a new one every few weeks. Not sure which size fits your puppy's breed? Email us at info@creationstanzo.com — we love helping and we know our products inside out.

Can I have my puppy's name engraved on their collar?

Yes — and it's probably the best decision you'll make for your puppy's first collar.

The name alone, for the memory. Your puppy's first collar is a moment. Having their name engraved on it is the kind of detail you hold onto — a photo, a keepsake, something that marks the beginning of your story together. Many of our customers tell us it's their favourite item in the whole order.

Your phone number, for peace of mind. A puppy slipping away in the first few weeks happens — even to the most careful owners. Having your number engraved directly on the collar is more reliable than a tag that jingles, spins, wears down, or gets lost. Whoever finds your puppy doesn't have to search — the information is right there, readable, immediate.

Both together is the perfect combo: their name on one side, your number on the other.

Since the engraving goes directly into the Biothane, there's no extra tag — nothing clinking on hardwood floors at night, nothing tangling, nothing to lose.

⏱ Order a few days ahead if you want the engraving ready for adoption day — Tanzo's preparation time is 1 to 5 business days.

What is a puppy umbilical cord leash and how do you use it?

An umbilical cord leash is a short leash (3 feet / 90 cm) with no hardware on the floor end — it trails behind your puppy indoors, and you hold the other end when you need it. You can also let it drag and simply place your foot on it to gently slow or stop your puppy.

Why no hardware on the floor end? So nothing clicks and scratches on your hardwood, vinyl, or tile floors. A detail designed for real home life.

How does it help? Those first weeks with a puppy, everything moves fast. The umbilical cord lets you:

Gently intercept an unwanted behaviour before it becomes a habit
Calmly redirect toward something appropriate
Keep your puppy in your line of sight without chasing them across the house

It's a positive training tool — no force, no punishment, just a physical presence that makes communication easier. At Tanzo, we believe the early bond between a human and their puppy is built through consistency and gentleness. The umbilical cord leash is designed exactly for that.

⚠️ Important: Never leave a puppy alone with their umbilical cord leash, and don't let them chew it. This tool is for direct supervision only.

Why use a long line with a puppy instead of letting them run free?

The long line is the most underrated puppy training tool — and one of the most powerful.

To protect developing joints. A growing puppy shouldn't be doing long sustained walks. Their joints and hips are still developing, and high-impact exercise can cause lasting damage. A long line allows outings in open spaces without forcing a pace — the puppy moves at their own speed, stops, explores, starts again.

For mental exercise through sniffing. A puppy who sniffs freely for 20 minutes is just as mentally tired as one who walks for 45 minutes on a short leash. Scent work is an intense cognitive activity — and a mentally tired puppy is a calm, receptive, easier-to-train puppy. This is well-documented in animal behaviour research and very few new owners know about it.

For recall, without pressure. The long line gives your puppy controlled freedom while maintaining a physical connection. It's the gentlest way to introduce the basics of recall, rooted in positive reinforcement.

Tanzo's Biothane long line is available in 20 feet — lightweight, waterproof, easy to hold even with mittens on, and made for Canadian parks and open spaces. We also carry 30 to 60-foot options!

⚠️ Reminder: A long line doesn't replace supervision. Never leave a puppy unsupervised with a long line, and don't let them chew the strap.

How do I tire out my puppy without taking them on long walks?

This is the question most new owners don't think to ask — and it's one of the most important ones for your puppy's long-term health.

Sniffing on a long line is the answer. Take your puppy to a park or open space and let them choose their path at the end of a 20-foot long line. They'll sniff everything, stop often, change direction constantly. That's exactly what you want. 20 to 30 minutes of free sniffing = the mental equivalent of a long walk, with none of the joint strain.

Other activities that tire mentally without overdoing it physically:

Nose work games indoors (hiding treats around the house)
Short learning sessions for new commands (5 minutes max)
Calm, structured play

A mentally tired puppy is a settled, calm puppy — and one that's far easier to train. That's the foundation of Tanzo's approach: tools designed to build a human-dog relationship based on engagement, not physical exhaustion.

What is positive reinforcement training for puppies and why does it matter from the start?

Positive reinforcement means rewarding the behaviours you want to see repeated — with a treat, an encouraging word, or play — rather than punishing what you don't want. With a puppy, this matters especially because the first weeks are when they're learning how the world works with you.

A puppy raised with positive reinforcement develops:

Solid self-confidence
A strong bond with their owner
A natural openness to learning

At Tanzo, all of our tools — clip collar, umbilical cord leash, long line — are developed within this philosophy. No force, no coercive techniques. We design accessories that support gentle communication, calm redirection, and genuine engagement between you and your dog. Because a dog who wants to be with you is infinitely more joyful to live with than one who obeys out of fear.

Collar or harness for a puppy — which one should I start with?

Both have their place — just not necessarily at the same time.

Start with the clip collar. For the first few weeks, it's the simplest and most versatile tool: it holds the ID tag, works with the umbilical cord leash indoors, and is easy to put on and take off multiple times a day.

The harness can wait a few weeks — until your puppy is a little more comfortable with the leash and with outings in general. It becomes especially useful when you start longer walks and want to reduce pressure on the trachea.

For leash manners training, an anti-pull harness is excellent — but be ready to use it correctly and consistently. The principle is simple: the moment your puppy pulls and creates tension, you stop completely. No movement until the leash goes slack again. It's effective, but it requires consistency on every single outing. If you're not ready to apply that every time, wait a bit — a tool used inconsistently sends mixed signals to a puppy.

Brachycephalic breeds (pugs, bulldogs, Boston terriers) are the exception: for them, a harness from day one is recommended, given their more fragile respiratory function.

How can Tanzo help me if I have questions about my puppy's accessories?

We're not a big-box retailer. We're a neighbourhood shop — online.

What that actually means: when you have a question about our products, you're talking to a real person who knows them inside out, who has dogs, and who genuinely wants to help you make the right choice.

By email at info@creationstanzo.com — we respond quickly and take the time to actually answer properly.

By phone — because sometimes it's just easier to talk it through.

And yes, we've done FaceTime calls with customers. When someone needed to see how to fit a collar, how to hold the umbilical cord leash, or which long line length made sense for their space — we jumped on a call. Because that's what service means to us.

We're here to help you use our products well. For behaviour or training questions, we warmly recommend working with a certified dog trainer — that's their expertise, not ours, and your puppy deserves both.

Ask us anything about our products. We love it.
