What type of dog collar should I choose?

The best dog collar depends on your dog’s body shape and your needs. A quick-release buckle collar is a practical choice for daily walks, while a martingale dog collar may be helpful for dogs that tend to back up and slip out of a regular collar.
What is the difference between a buckle collar and a martingale collar?

A buckle collar opens and closes using a quick-release buckle. A martingale collar usually slips over the dog’s head and tightens by a limited amount when the leash becomes tense. When properly adjusted, it can help prevent a dog from backing out of the collar.
Which dogs are martingale collars suitable for?

Martingale collars are especially helpful for dogs whose heads are narrower than their necks and for dogs that may back out of a regular collar. A martingale must always be properly fitted and used under supervision.
Can a martingale collar help a dog that pulls on the leash?

At Tanzo, we favour positive reinforcement and avoid coercive corrections. However, before turning to more drastic training methods, the controlled tightening of a properly fitted martingale collar can provide a useful additional signal.

That signal must be taught to the dog: when the collar tightens, the walk stops; when it loosens, the walk continues. With proper training and without leash jerks, a martingale collar can help teach loose-leash walking.

Simply tightening the collar and expecting discomfort to make a dog stop pulling is neither the right method nor the right use of this tool.
How should a martingale dog collar be used for training?

The collar must first be properly adjusted so that its tightening remains limited. The dog must then be taught what the signal means using consistency and positive reinforcement: when the leash becomes tense, stop; when the collar loosens, reward the dog and continue walking.

The martingale then becomes a communication tool rather than a way to punish or force the dog.

How do I measure my dog’s neck for a collar?

If your dog’s current collar fits properly, measure its inside circumference while it is fastened.
You can also position a piece of string around your dog’s neck, mark where the two ends meet, and then measure the string with a measuring tape.
Once adjusted, you should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between the collar and your dog’s neck.
Which dog collar width should I choose?

Our medium dog collars are available in 1-inch and 1.5-inch widths. Our large dog collars are available in 1.5-inch and 2-inch widths.

A narrower collar is generally more discreet on a short-haired dog. A wider collar remains more visible through long or thick fur and is also well suited to dogs with a larger build. Your choice will mainly depend on your dog’s coat, body shape, and the look you prefer.
Are fabric dog collars durable and washable?

Yes. Each collar is made with quality cotton fabric sewn over strong polypropylene webbing and finished with metal D-rings. Our fabric dog collars are machine washable and should be laid flat to dry.

All Tanzo fabric dog collars are designed and handcrafted in Canada. Because every piece of fabric is cut individually, pattern placement may vary slightly, making each collar unique.
